Stranger than Fiction

When the Old and New Cities of Jerusalem were reunited in 1967, a recently widowed Arab woman, who  had been living in Old Jerusalem since 1948, wanted to see once more the house in which she formerly lived.
Now that the city was one, she searched for and found her old home. She knocked on the door of the apartment, and a Jewish widow came to the door and greeted her. The Arab woman explained that she had lived there until 1948 and wanted to look around. She was invited in and offered coffee. The Arab woman said, “When I lived here, I hid some valuables. If they are still here, I will share them with you half and half.”
The Jewish woman refused. “If they belonged to you and are still here, they are yours.” After much discussion back and forth, they entered the bathroom, loosened the floor planks, and found a hoard of gold coins. The Jewish woman said, “I shall ask the government to let you keep them.” She did and permission was granted.
The two widows visited each other again and again, and one day the Arab woman told her, “You know, in the 1948 fighting here, my husband and I were so frightened that we ran away to escape. We grabbed our belongings, took the children, and each fled separately. We had a three-month-old son. I thought my husband had taken him, and he thought I had. Imagine our grief when we were reunited in Old Jerusalem to find that neither of us had taken the child.”
The Jewish woman turned pale, and asked the exact date. The Arab woman named the date and the hour, and the Jewish widow told her: “My husband was one of the Israeli troops that entered Jerusalem. He came into this house and found a baby on the floor. He asked if he could keep the house and the baby, too. Permission was granted.”
At that moment, a twenty-year-old Israeli soldier in uniform walked into the room, and the Jewish woman broke down in tears. “This is your son,” she cried.
This is one of those incredible tales we hear. And the aftermath? The two women liked each other so much that the Jewish widow asked the Arab mother: “Look, we are both widows living alone. Our children are grown up. This house has brought you luck. You have found your son, or our son. Why don’t we live together?” And they did.

Adjective or Adverb

Adjectives are words that describe nouns or pronouns. They may come before the word they describe (That is a cute puppy.) or they may follow the word they describe (That puppy is cute.).

Adverbs are words that modify everything but nouns and pronouns. They modify adjectives, verbs, and other adverbs. A word is an adverb if it answers how, when, or where.

The only adverbs that cause grammatical problems are those that answer the question how, so focus on these.

Examples:
She thinks fast/fastly.
Fast answers the question how, so it is an adverb. But fast never has an -ly attached to it.
We performed bad/badly.
Badly describes how we performed.

Let’s practice with this standard bank transactions! /
Recuerda que la práctica de Inglés es la única manera de dominar el idioma. Vamos a practicar con estas preguntas sobre transacciones bancarias!

AT THE BANK

When you go into a bank to open an account, the first thing you need to say is,

‘I would like to open a bank account.’ There are many different types of accounts so they will probably explain all the different accounts. A free checking account is the most useful so I will use the checking account as the example.

A checking account will have several types. A free account, a paid account, and a premium paid account. The difference between these accounts are that they provide more services such as free traveler’s check or free bank checks with the premium accounts. When they ask you what type of account you want, you can say, ‘I would like a free checking account.’

When you close an account, it is much more difficult. Banks do not like people closing accounts so you have to be persistent. When I tried to close a checking account I wasn’t using, it really took me three times before I succeeded. Each time they showed me the benefit of keeping it and I was convinced.

After three trips to the bank, I finally closed the account. Here are some sentences you can use. ‘I would like to close my bank account.’ They will ask you, ‘Why do you want to close your bank account?’, ‘Is there a reason you want to close your account?’, or ‘Were you unsatisfied with something?’

The simple answer is, ‘I just don’t use this account so I want to close it.’

Here is a short list of a variety of sentences that you might need at the bank:

  • ‘What do I need to open an account?’
  • ‘Can I have multiple accounts?’
  • ‘Do you have online service with each account?’
  • ‘How do I access my account online?’
  • ‘Does this account come with online bill payer?’
  • ‘Can I pay all my bills online with this account?’
  • ‘How much do you charge if I use a different banks ATM?’
  • ‘What are all the charges with this particular account?’
  • ‘Do you have a safe deposit box here?’
  • ‘I would like to rent a safe deposit box.’
  • ‘How much is it to rent a safe deposit box?’
  • ‘How do I access my safe deposit box?’
  • ‘What are the hours at this branch?’
  • ‘How many branches do you have?’
  • ‘I would like to take out a loan.’
  • ‘May I speak to someone about a business loan?’
  • ‘I am interested in taking out a home equity line of credit. Who can I speak to about this?’

 WRECK IT RALPH

Ralph is a heavy-handed “wrecking riot” with a heart. For 30 years, he’s been doing his job as the bad guy in the arcade game Fixt-it Felix Jr. But it’s getting harder and harder to love his job when no one seems to like him for doing it. Suffering from a classic case of “bad guy fatigue” and hungry for a little “wreck-ognition”, Ralph embarks on a wild adventure across an incredible arcade-game universe to prove that just because he’s a bad guy doesn’t mean he’s a “bad guy.”

We use “will” to express the idea of a general prediction about the future. Predictions are guesses about what might happen in the future. In “prediction” sentences, the subject usually has little control over the future.

For example:

The year 2222 will be a very interesting year.

Now let’s practice. Answer this questions expressing your predictions about the movie!

  • What do you think will happen with Ralph?
  • What do you imagine will happen after Ralph abandones his videogame?
  • What will the characters of Hero’s Duty think of Ralph?
  • Do you  think the characters of Hero’s Duty will accept Ralph as one of his on?
  • How will this affect the game Fixt-it Felix Jr?

American Customs.

America is well-known for its equality, liberty, fraternity. Everyone is very friendly and informal. Children often call their parents by their first names and at work, subordinates do not normally use “Mister” when addressing their supervisors. To those visitors who come from a more rigid and stratified society, such casualness can be confusing, leading to egregious blunders. Conversely, many worldly, sophisticated Americans appear mortified because they feel America is not “civilized,” with a capital “C.” However, we know of terribly embarrassing incidents from mistakes which only an innocent foreigner would have made.

• Public displays of affection between the sexes are very common, unlike perhaps where you have come from. Many couples also live together without being married-and may never marry. But you must realize their bond is probably as strong as the bond of marriage. So don’t think one of them is available for a “date.”

America is a notoriously “open” society, and to most foreigners Americans often appear exceptionally and “instantly” friendly. But sometimes such openness can lead to serious misunderstanding, especially between men and women. A casual invitation to have drinks and/or dinner does not mean that your American host also wants to become “intimate” with you afterwards. So be careful not to read too much into a friendly invitation
